C&J REPAIRS • PRACTICAL FITTING GUIDE
If a fitted blind frame sits too close to the window handle, an appropriately sized handle spacer may create extra operating clearance. The correct option depends on the shape of the handle backplate, fixing points and the clearance available.
Why does a handle catch on a Perfect Fit-style blind?
Some blind frames sit close to the opening window handle. The handle may touch the blind frame when turned, or the available space may make it awkward to operate. Moving a compatible handle forwards by a measured amount can sometimes help, but not every handle or window system is suitable.
Rectangular, rounded or cockspur: which do you need?
- Rectangular backplate: compare the straight-sided outline and mounting holes with our approximately 63mm rectangular spacer listing.
- Rounded backplate: compare curved ends, overall length and the fixing layout with our approximately 63mm rounded alternative.
- Cockspur handle: the handle and locking mechanism differ from many espagnolette designs. Check the specific cockspur profile, fixing pattern and listed model references separately.
Don't order by appearance alone. Two window handles can have similar-looking backplates yet different screw centres, locating features or spindle arrangements. Compare all relevant dimensions.
Choosing spacer thickness
Our rectangular and rounded spacer listings include 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm options. Measure the extra clearance needed at the point where the handle catches, then check whether the handle's fixing and locking mechanism can accommodate the change. More thickness is not always better.
What to check before fitting
- Photograph the existing handle in the closed and operating positions.
- Measure the backplate length, width and distance between mounting holes.
- Check whether the outline is rectangular, rounded or a different shape entirely.
- Confirm the appropriate spacer depth and whether compatible fixings and adequate spindle engagement will be retained.
- If uncertain, seek guidance from a competent window fitter rather than modifying a locking mechanism by guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
Are Perfect Fit spacers universal?
No. Perfect Fit-style installations and window handles vary. Compatibility is determined by the actual handle and blind frame, not the blind name alone.
Do thicker spacers come with longer screws?
Do not assume additional screws are included. Review the individual listing's contents and fitting information, and check that suitable fixings are available.
Can spacers affect window security?
Moving a handle can affect fixings or the engagement of a window mechanism if installed incorrectly. Ensure the handle remains securely fixed and the window locks and closes normally.
