3.5 Inch Door Hinge Shims: Door Alignment Guide

C&J REPAIRS • PRACTICAL FITTING GUIDE

An uneven door gap can have several causes, from loose fixings to hinge placement. Thin hinge shims can sometimes help fine-tune a compatible installation, but they are not a substitute for repairing damaged hinges, frames or fixings.

3.5 inch door hinge alignment shims in assorted thicknesses

What is a door hinge shim?

A hinge shim is a thin packer fitted between an appropriate hinge leaf and its mounting surface. It changes the position of that hinge by a small amount. Our range includes replacement shims intended for selected 3.5-inch hinge layouts.

When might hinge shims help?

  • A minor gap imbalance where the hinge position needs a small adjustment.
  • A hinge leaf that needs controlled packing during fitting or maintenance.
  • Situations where a suitable shim can be used without reducing the security or integrity of the fixings.

A door that suddenly drops, binds heavily or no longer latches may have a loose or damaged hinge, warped frame or other fault. Investigate the actual cause before attempting to compensate with a spacer.

Choosing shim thickness

Our 3.5-inch hinge shim listing describes 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm and 2mm options. The appropriate thickness depends on the measured gap and how the specific door responds to adjustment. Small incremental changes are preferable to assuming the thickest packer is best.

What to measure

  1. Confirm your hinge size rather than relying on the door's overall dimensions.
  2. Compare the shim outline and hinge screw positions with the listing photographs.
  3. Check for loose screws, damaged timber, bent hinge leaves or movement in the frame.
  4. Check whether the door is fire-rated, security-rated or part of a certified assembly. Follow the applicable manufacturer's fitting requirements.
  5. Ensure the final hinge installation retains safe fixing engagement and the door opens, closes and latches correctly.

Safety note: Avoid modifying fire doors, security doors or other certified door assemblies without guidance from a qualified installer and the manufacturer's requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Will a hinge shim fix a dropped door?

Not always. A shim may help with a small alignment issue but cannot repair a failing hinge or unsound frame.

Are 3.5-inch shims suitable for any hinge?

No. You must match the physical hinge layout, screw positions and available clearances.

Should I replace or pack the strike plate instead?

That depends on the fault. Our strike plate spacer guide explains the different job of a keeper or latch packer.
