C&J REPAIRS • PRACTICAL FITTING GUIDE
A strike plate spacer sits behind a suitable door-frame keeper or latch plate. It can alter the position of the plate by a controlled amount. Choosing one requires more than matching the approximate outline.
What is a door strike plate spacer?
The strike plate is the fitting on the door frame that receives the latch or other compatible locking component. A shim or packer placed behind a suitable plate can move that fitting slightly. This may be useful during a controlled adjustment, but only where the door hardware allows it.
Understanding 58×20mm and 70×28mm sizes
Our range includes listings described as 58×20mm and 70×28mm strike plate spacers. These are different sizes, not alternative names for the same item. Before ordering, check both the overall plate dimensions and the location of the fixing holes and latch opening.
- 58×20mm: compare the smaller listed outline against the actual keeper or strike plate.
- 70×28mm: compare the larger listed outline and ensure the hole locations and cut-outs match.
- Thickness and pack: select from the variations shown on the relevant listing only after confirming the physical fit.
How to measure your strike plate
- With the door open, photograph the installed keeper or strike plate and its surrounding frame.
- Measure the plate's overall length and width in millimetres.
- Check the distance between screw hole centres and the shape and position of the latch opening.
- Identify whether the underlying plate and its fixings remain sound.
- Compare these details with the exact product gallery before selecting a size or thickness.
Important: A strike plate packer is not a remedy for every locking fault. A door that fails to latch securely or has an unreliable lock should be assessed and repaired appropriately.
Strike plate spacer or hinge shim?
A hinge shim adjusts the relationship between the hinge and its mounting surface. A strike plate spacer changes the position of a compatible keeper or latch plate. They address different aspects of door alignment and are not substitutes for one another.
Common questions
Can I fit a shim behind any strike plate?
No. Check the mounting design, screw engagement and whether the hardware manufacturer permits packing.
Do spacers replace a faulty lock?
No. They do not repair worn mechanisms, broken keeps or other faults that compromise secure locking.
